Neurogenic tumours and paragangliomas

  • Neurogenic tumours are mostly benign but sometimes malignant nerve sheath tumours originating in small to large nerves of the neck. They require excision through a neck incision if they grow too big.
  • Paragangliomas are nerve cell tumours in tissue around certain arteries and veins in the neck. The most common one is the carotid body tumour which can be excised through a neck incision. The jugular paraganglioma are mostly treated with observation as they often to not grow or radiation if they do, however complex surgery at the skulll base is possible when indicated.
